Light Rail Station Workshop Results
Regional Transit (RT) and the Capitol Area Development Authority (CADA) hosted a community workshop on Wednesday April 25.   Led by Barry Wasserman, AIA, the workshop’s goal was to prioritize the improvements needed for the 13th and 16th Street Light Rail Stations while adhering to a budget for construction.  Many of the station improvement priorities the attendees listed confirmed results from workshops in 2003 and 2004.  Unlike the prior workshops, RT’s the hired design team, Callander associates, to prepare the designs and plans for actual construction of wanted improvements.  Ideas and priorities for the two stations included a new accessible ramp at 16th Street station, new shelters, emergency phones, artwork, additional seating areas, and better landscaping.   A complete summary of the workshop will be posted on www.rstreet.info during the week of May 14th.

Callander Associates, will be analyzing the workshop results and begin working on preliminary designs for both stations.  The preliminary improvements and their designs will be reviewed at another community meeting that will be scheduled sometime in the middle of June.  Keep checking the R Street website at www.rstreet.info for updates and additional information.

The Sandwich Spot
A new sandwich dining destination has emerged in a recently renovated building at the corner of 18th and Q Streets. The Sandwich Spot has been only open a few months and already has lines out the door during lunch and Owner Tom Heally couldn’t be more pleased.

“Business has been awesome! ” Heally says, “Its been better than expected”.

Heally chose the Q Street location because he believes downtown/midtown has room for mom and pop type places and believes people feel more comfortable with that atmosphere.

Heally eventually plans to ramp up the marketing in the coming months and plans to expand the delivery side of the business. Currently “The Spot” offers delivery services for orders for 5 or more and encourages those that want a sandwich for take out to call-in their orders. Heally says “I want the people who drive or need a quick sandwich to get in and out as fast as possible.”

He also plans to participate in local charities and neighborhood groups in order to stay involved in the community.

With a long list of unique sandwiches, quality ingredients, and tremendous customer service, the Sandwich Spot looks like it will be a neighborhood favorite for years to come.
